DESCRIPTION: APW - Rockford, 11-15J, 18S, heavy 14K gold false box hinge drum style Waltham HC with beautiful engraving detail including an idyllic lakeside house and sailboat scene to rear, front shield with initial, gold cuvette engraved "Thomas P. Leonard from Mother, Christmas 1887," "Hess & Culbertson, St. Louis, MO" marked white enamel DS dial, transitional style SW-LS with retained KW arbor, nickel damascene, s#164634. Gross weight of assembled watch 96.3 dwt (149.8 g). A notably beautiful gold boxed hunting case with superb engraving detail. This case does show additional case screw marks from having at one time having held another movement, but interestingly the present movement has been lightly scribed with the name "Leonard" which matches to the 1887 case inscription. For this reason we suspect this watch has likely held this movement since its original point of sale in 1887, and that perhaps the additional case screw marks were from another movement that was briefly considered for pairing with this case prior to its sale with the Rockford movement.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, mvt with owner's surname "Leonard" lightly scribed to the right side of the barrel bridge, otherwise excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some toning of plate surfaces, few micro-fine scratches, mismatched case screws; excellent dial with very small flake at upper perimeter of seconds-register, few tiny surface nicks and mild fine scratches elsewhere; excellent hands, minute appears to be missing a tiny bit of its tip; case shows hardly any wear, ding or mild small dent to band at 4:30, mild shallow compression type dent at center of cuvette, superb engraving detail; tight bow, crown shows little wear; good glass crystal.
ESTIMATE: $2400 - $2800
